Fogging, fumigation, disinfection and its types

Fogging

Disinfectants include both fumigation and fogging process. The terms fumigation and fogging have slightly different meanings. They are as follows.

Fumigation Fogging
Formaldehyde and potassium permanganate are mostly in use Hydrogen peroxide and silver ions are mostly in use
The chemical formaldehyde is carcinogenic These chemicals do not have any serious health hazards
De-fumigation is necessary, to get rid of the residues once the fumigation is over. Cleaning after fogging is not necessary
Should carry it around, like a fire extinguisher while operating Need a fogger machine to operate. The fogger machine remains at a fixed place.

Fogging process

  • Turn off the AC. This is because AC allows the disinfected air to escape out of the room and brings in the contaminated air.

  • Clean the room to get rid of dust and dirt particles before fogging.

  • Cover your machinery equipment with plastic (if necessary). You can clean them later with 70% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol.

  • Solutions such as acetone, benzene, and alcohol are flammable. So, do not dispense these solutions.

  • Users should not expose themselves to the disinfectants.

  • Do not operate a fogger machine in an open room. Also, once the process is complete, leave the room for an hour for the disinfectants to work effectively.

Disinfectant

The nature of fumigating or fogging chemicals can fall under one of the three categories of disinfectant.

Levels of disinfectants

1. High- level

High-level disinfectants are used as germicides to disinfect medical equipment in hospitals (OT, ICU, etc) and R & D and QC of pharmaceutical companies.  For example, a Silvicide solution is one of the most common disinfecting solutions found in the market. Similarly, there are other high- level disinfectants such as Cidex and Vespore. 

2. Mid-level

Mid-level disinfectants are in use, as germicides to disinfect hospital beds, floors, walls, household purposes, etc. For example,  70% ethanol, iso-propyl alcohol, etc. are some of the mid-level disinfectants.

3. Low- level

Disinfectants, such as iodophor compounds are useful in making a hand sanitizer.
